Motor Neuron Disease (MND)

Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nerve cells (motor neurons) that control voluntary muscles. Over time, these neurons degenerate and die, leading to muscle weakness, wasting, and loss of mobility. Eventually, it affects speech, swallowing, and breathing.

Types of MND

There are several forms of MND, with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) being the most common. Other types include:

  • Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP) – affects speech and swallowing first.
  • Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) – affects upper motor neurons, leading to stiffness.
  • Progressive Muscular Atrophy (PMA) – affects lower motor neurons, leading to muscle wasting.

Is It Curable?

Currently, there is no cure for MND. However, treatments and therapies can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. These may include:

  • Medications like Riluzole and Edaravone to slow progression.
  • Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy to maintain movement and function.
  • Speech and Swallowing Support for communication and nutrition.
  • Ventilation Assistance for breathing difficulties.

Research is ongoing, and while there is hope for future treatments, MND remains a life-limiting condition.
